Fundamentals of Soil Science by Henry D. Foth Wiley; 8 edition

Product Description
by Henry D. Foth
384 pages
Publisher: Wiley; 8 edition (August 22, 1990)

This major revision of a bestselling text shows that soil is three-dimensional and dynamic. This concept is developed in the first two chapters and is built on throughout the book. Chapters 3 through 7 explore soil physical properties and water, with expanded coverage of tillage and traffic and an increased emphasis on water and wind erosion processes. Chapters 8 through 11 discuss the biological aspects of soils as well as their mineralogical and chemical properties. In Chapters 12 through 15, the general area of soil fertility and fertilizer use is covered. Other chapters examine soil genesis, taxonomy, geography, land use and soil survey, and land use interpretations. Finally in chapter 20, the importance of nonagronomic factors in the food population problem are discussed. Both English and metric units are used for crop yields, new figures and tables are included, summary statements are given at the end of the more difficult sections and at the end of each chapter, and non-agricultural examples and several computer applications are provided for reference.

Trees of Cambodia on CD Royal University of Agriculture

Trees of Cambodia on CD
Feb, 29th 2008, The Faculty of Forestry Science at Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) and DED presented the second version of "Digital Species" at the end of February. "Digital Species" is a compendium of Cambodian forestry species on CD. No similar source is currently available in Cambodia, neither in digital nor printed form. The project idea was initiated by a Bachelor thesis work in 2003 and has since the support of a Cambodian team of the RUA and DED expert Jens Richter. When the CD was launched in Phnom Penh the deputy director of the RUA, Dr. Lau Ny, and DED country director, Mr Wolfgang Möllers, praised the success of the four years old project.

In Cambodia there are more than 200 different trees that man utilizes as decorative or useful plant. "Digital Species" covers 85 of them. The bilingual database (Khmer and English) provides extended information on more than 700 datasheets with more than 400 photos and drawings. Conditions of growth, botanic characteristics and use of tree sort are only three categories tagged with each species. A search engine serves for specific research and on the other hand invites to discover unknown tree sorts. When you want to know where in Cambodia which tree is growing, you can select a map. Further online research opportunities, an extended glossary and a notepad make the CD an indispensable tool for students, teachers, local and international development agencies as well as research institutions.

The software was developed by Cambodian students of the RUA specifically for this project. Further financial and personnel support was granted by the German Embassy, InWEnt and Senior Expert Service (SES).

Geographic Information Systems in Water Resources Engineering CRC Press 2008

Publication Date: December 17, 2008
Number of Pages: 316 , CRC Press Taylor and Francis Group
Lynn Johnson
University of Colorado, Denver, USA

Summary
State-of-the-art GIS spatial data management and analysis tools are revolutionizing the field of water resource engineering. Familiarity with these technologies is now a prerequisite for success in engineers’ and planners’ efforts to create a reliable infrastructure.

GIS in Water Resource Engineering presents a review of the concepts and applications of GIS in the various sub-fields of water resource engineering. After a summary review of analyses and database functions, the book addresses concepts and applications in the following areas:

  • Surface Water Hydrology
  • Groundwater Hydrology
  • Water Supply and Irrigation systems
  • Wastewater and Stormwater Systems
  • Floodplain Management
  • Water Quality
  • Water Resource Monitoring and Forecasting
  • River Basin Planning and Management

The book develops a general understanding of the nature of GIS and how it is used to create and analyze geographic data. The author first introduces primary field data collection methods and describes procedures for interpretation and analysis. The second portion of the book focuses on the linkage of GIS data with water resource analysis and management models. Applications are presented with descriptions of GIS database development, analysis background theory, and model integration with GIS.

The profound impact of GIS systems on water resources engineering continues to grow. GIS in Water Resource Engineering arms engineers and planners with an arsenal of tools to assist in the creation of a reliable, environmentally sensitive, infrastructure.
